I love the place, but my husband hates it (during spring summer and autumn, but it is very difficult to get to in Winter!). Having spent most of my childhood in and around that area, I seem to be immune to the scottish midges - my husband is not and they can be enough to distract you from the scenery.
1 trick I have learnt over the years, is not to pitch your tent until you are ready to get into it. If you have to pitch, then don't put the inner up until bedtime - that way you sleep midge free, but with no ventilation!
