You have a point that the 80-400 is to slow for taking some action, I try it every time again and sometimes it will, but you need to have some space around you so you don't have to do it to fast, the lens needs some time to activate the VR although the quality wich the lens give is very good, but ..so as it is with bird fotography, the best quality you get when the birds are coming towards you and when the sun is shining.
