It is only because it is a winner (viva la green, white & red).
Years ago I used to drive a Fiat Mirrafiori Rally which was painted in green, white and red. It was just amazing how many Italian people used to stop me or came to me to find out if I am an Italian as well because they just loved the colours of my car (ha-ha-ha). Today, if I still had it, I think they would have paid BIG money to buy it from me.
What is very interesting though, is the fact that a couple of hours before the game started I predicted the very outcome of the game here on TN. I critiqued a photo of an Italian fan Andrea Piazza (elefantino) and a French fan Emmanuel Boitier (emmari) as they both uploaded almost similar dragonflies almost at the exact same time and I commented to Emmanuel that this might mean we will see a draw at full time which would lead to a penalty kick-out. Just for the sake of interest you can see that critique here.
