Hi Gerhardt.
The ID of this bug was initially a big problem. As you can see I took the shot quite a while ago. I actually got a lot of pictures and had a huge choice.
The ID was difficult till I bought the Sasol field guide to Insects of Southern Africa.
Acording to this book, most ground beetles ( 1400 species )have fused wing cases and cannot fly except for tiger beetles which havew distinct yellow and black markings ( 150 species )
This bug, actually flew around quite a lot and I followed it to at least five locations to get the pictures I took. From this, I was convinced that it was an assassin beetle.
It would be interesting to get some books with all the different species of all the bugs but I guess that is a library on its own.
Should you find anything about this I'd be interested in getting some more information as well.
Thanks for the question.
PS. I understand that yellow, orange, black and combinations of these colours spell warnings signs to all predators in nature. |
