It's not a big enigma :-) "Mind the gap" is simply phrase used in London underground to warn passengers of a significant gap between the train door and the platform at some stations. It became sort of symbol of London. You can for example buy T-shirts with "mind the gap" signs and stuff like that. If you travel by london tube you can hear it at some stations. I don't really know why but often it sounds quite funny.
