the second (middle) swan's neck is not visible at all, you can see just the slight bulge of the chest above the first swan's. All that fuzz belongs to the first swan, giving his neck an odd thickening appearance.

I like the DMC FZ50, only had it a couple of months, so still getting use to it. So far it's living up to my expectations and I'm happy with it. The leica lens, with manual (12x optical) zoom and focus rings on the barrel, are what initially attracted me; and the fact the lens is threaded so you can use filters & adaptor lenses is a big plus.

There is an issue of noise in low light conditions and at higher ISO speeds. To date this hasn't created problems with the type of shooting I do. Other than that it is a great camera, with comfortable grip and controls well placed.

If, like myself, you are not in a position to lay out a large sum of money for a digital SLR and a couple of lenses, then I would recommend the DMC FZ50. On the other hand, if you CAN afford it, then an SLR is the way to go. The Canon range seems to be quite popular with people here on TrekNature, if you can go by the equipment profiles, and I've a number of friends who have Canon's and recommend them highly.

I hope I've been helpful, Michele
