Although I have visited Belize, I did not visit the Blue Holes. They are both limestone solution holes, caused by the weak carbonic acid (which is what rain is) dissolving the limestone. The Sacred Cenote at Chitchen Itza, further north in Mexico is another example. There are also examples in the Bahamas.
I am not sure what the cause of this one is - the surrounding rocks are mainly quartzite which does not dissolve in rainwater.
