SA ranks as one of the top birding destinations in the world. Birders from around the world come to experience the great variety of African, migrant, and endemic birds.

Of the ±850 bird species recorded in SA, 725 are resident and 50 are endemic and unique. SA also hosts various intra-African migrants and birds from the Arctic, Europe, Central Asia, China and Antarctica during the year.
