On the 27th of June, I left the mountains of Lozère and the Gorges du Tarn to go further down, to the Mediterranean Sea, because my friend Daniel wanted to see the sea.
We found a wonderful camping, in a region called Camargue. In France everybody knows what Camargue is, but I think in other lands you may not know, so I explain. Just before throwing itself in the Mediterranean Sea, the river called Rhône separates into 2 arms, and the Camargue is the area located between those 2 arms.
It is a land of sea and beaches and lakes and marshes - a land where you find water everywhere. Most ofen, they are lakes of salt water, which creates a very unique natural environment, with plants and animals that you cannot find anywhere lese in France. One fo the most amazing things there are the birds. They are everywhere. The first day, I took my camera out every five seconds because I saw a bird, shooting madly and desperate to catch each of these beautiful creatures. Then after some days, I got so used to them that I didn't even bother to capture them anymore, as my camera was full of them already. It was a great experience.
Camargue is know also for its white horses and its black bulls - not so interesting for TN, but great to watch as they are living and semi-liberty and very often they behave like their wild ancestors did.
We spent a wonderful week, down there, but still there were 2 problems - the mosquitos, which were eating us alive, and the hot temperatures, much hotter than anything we have ever known in the north of France. This climate is really nothing for me, as I have understood on those long hours where it was too hot, too dry to do anything. Luckily, we could bath in the sea to refresh ourselves.
One of the best parts, was our trips to the beach, early in the morning, when there was no people, just the sea birds, the sand and the sea. I made some funny photo experiments with the waves, I trained on capturing in-fmlight birds, and I picked up tiny beautiful sea shells. It was so peaceful, so serene. Later, when more people came, the magic was broken, but I think I will always remember those long lonely hours of peace.
On the 3rd of July, we went home again - happy to escape the mosquitos, happy to go back to a more tolerable climate, but still it was the end of holidays, and it was a bit sad. It was the first time I went on holiday with a camera, and now, at least, I have many wonderful pictures to show other people and to keep in memory those wonderful places, those wonderful moments... |
