Hello again Friends,
Just today I have come back from a three week long trip to Ukraine. During that trip I was studying Ponto-Caspian amphipods living in the Prypyat and Dnieper rivers as well as in the very special places - Black Sea limans.

What are limans?
Liman is the name for a lake, lagoon or an estuary formed at a lower river valley and mouth flooded by sea waters. Such events took place along the western and northern Black Sea shores after the end of the last glaciation, when the huge massess of sea water from the Mediterranean Sea broke through to the formerly isolated freshwater lake. The limans have very peculiar environmental conditions with salt water occuring deeper and covered by fresh or brackish watermasses. Also the fauna is special - composed mostly of species being relics from the ancient times before the Black Sea became the true sea.

Here you can see the Dniester Liman formed at the estuary of the Dniester river. The area of the liman varies between 360 and 408 kmē, depending on the seasonal water level. It is 42,5 km long and has maximum width of 12 km. The average depth is 1,8 m, the maximum depth 2,7 m.

The liman is a house for many interesting animals but also has very picturesque cliff shores with hidden freshwater springs inhabited by crustaceans, molluscs and aquatic insects that couldn't otherways survive in this hot and dry area. It is amazing to realize that the springs have been shelters for these creatures for at least several thousands of year.

The Dniester river rises in Ukraine, near the city of Drohobych, close to the border with Poland, and flows toward the Black Sea formig in some parts the border between Ukraine and Moldova. The river represents de facto the western boundary of the Eurasian Steppe zone.

Thanks for stopping by!
Cheers,
Michal

Witaj Michale,
Przeczytalem interesujaca notke o limanach i obejrxalem bardzo dobre zdjecie. Kompozycja jest ciekawa kolorystycznie chociaz maly rozmiarnie pozwala ukazac calego piekna krajobrazu.
Pozdrawiam, Pawel

Hi Michal!

I like the deep tones presented here, some might find it under exposed a bit but for this scene I find it good like this, details do come out well this way. Composition also very good. TFS!

Best regards,
Andor

Do zobaczenia w pracy! ;)
Radek

Czesc Michal,
Unbelievably beautiful landscape. I don't speak Polish, but I guess Radomir (cicindela) mentioned the horizon isn't 100% straight. I'm not totally sure. In July, beside Lake Balaton I've done many landscapes and realized how difficult to set the horizon if the distance of the other part isn't constant, like on Your photo. Composition-wise Your shot's more than great: closer riverside with sandy soil is in the lower third, while the sky's in the upper, and there's the river and the other side in between. Trees are also on the right places. Wonderful job. Also the choice of exposure is excellent, great contrast between the bright sand and the water.
I like this image so much that I bookmark it as one of my faves. Tfs.
Best regards from Wegry, Wladyslaw

Czesc Michal!

Fajne przestrzenie. Podoba mi sie zestawienie wody i sprawiajacych bardzo suche wrazenie wzgorz. Od samego patrzenia na nie robi sie goraco :-) Mam nadzieje, ze wyprawa byla owocna i bedzie z niej duzo zdjec.
