Kingdom: Plantae

(unranked): Angiosperms

(unranked): Eudicots

(unranked): Rosids

Order: Malvales

Family: Malvaceae

Genus: Alcea

Species: A. rosea

Alcea rosea (Common Hollyhock; syn. Althaea chinensis Wall., Althaea ficifolia Cav., Althaea rosea Cav.) is an ornamental plant in the Malvaceae family.
It was imported into Europe from China in the sixteenth century. William Turner, an herbalist of the time, gave it the name "holyoke" from which the English name derives.
Alcea rosea is a hardy perennial, and once established should flower for many years. It will grow in a wide range of soils, and can easily reach a height of about 8 ft. The flowers are a range of colours from white to dark red, including pink, yellow and orange. Different colours prefer different soils. The darker red variety seems to favour sandy soils, while the lighter colour seems to favour clay soils. The plants are easily grown from seed, and readily self-seed. However, tender plants, whether young from seed or from old stock, may be wiped out by slugs and snails. The foliage is subject to attack from rust (Puccinia malvacearum), which may be treated with fungicides. Commercial growers have reported that some varieties (Alcea rugosa and Alcea ficifolia) are resistant to this fungus.
Hollyhock is stated to be an emollient and laxative. It is used to control inflammation, to stop bedwetting and as a mouthwash in cases of bleeding gums.

ALCEA ROSEA.

Hello Luciano,
the Alcea rosea (Common Hollyhock) is one of my most favourite flowers. You have shown this one off so very well. I like your POV as I can feel my looking up to its height. Lovely rosy colour and sharpness.Best regards Siggi

Bonjour Luciano,
Bon dimanche,
Catherine

kalimera Luciano, very nice capture, bright with natural colors, a very good photo performance!

Ciao Luciano,
Grazie e complimenti
Buona giornata
Ciao Maurizio

greeting lou

A perfect composition Luciano, rich and natural colours of the image look so nice against the clear BG. Good job indeed!

Ciao Luciano.

Hallo Luciano
A lovely macro from your lens. What a delight to look at such a beautiful shot, filled with soft, but striking colours. The detail captured is great and pleasant to look at and admire. The striking pink flower is very beautiful and eye-catching. I like all the unopened flower buds in the image. Thanks for sharing this pretty image. I also want to use this opportunity to send my warmest seasonal greetings to you, no matter if you celebrate Christmas or not. Thanks for you loyal friendship to me in 2010. Best regards.
