This was an insane amount of work. Gerhard started it, and now I have enrolled in a course to try get to grips with this fiendish programme, called Photoshop. I have been trying it in my own way for two years, doing the basics, and less. Now, I know about a thing called levels, and suddenly, things I could never do, is possible. I have posted 2 WS’s - The one is the original photograph, the other a “play in PS”, not finished off, not well planned, but the essence is there! Please comment and help – it will be appreciated.

The process here is simple, but not with a subject like this Ground Squirrel. You start off by Image, Duplicate. PS makes a new copy, and you can close the original, save and sound.
Now, duplicate layer under Layers. You can delete the first layer, since it is locked and you can not work on it. Now you duplicate the layer again. Make sure you click on the top layer in the Layer Palette.

Now, go to Image, Adjustments, Desaturate. This changes the top level to B&W, but it does not change the colours like in Image, Mode. Now, use the eraser, and start rubbing out the top layer over the squirrel. (the body is 90% and is easy, and takes 5% of the time. Now you change the size of the brush to 1 pixel, and start on each hair of the tail, and work for more than two hours, if you are a beginner like me.

Then highlight the bottom, coloured layer on the Layers Palette, enhance the image as you wish, do the same with the B&W layer, flatten the layers to save as jpeg, otherwise it can only be saved as a .psd file. Now frame as normal. Comments and critiques welcome – Steve – you started the Arty debate - here is one for that category, and still fully in Nature.

Gerhard has already posted info on this delightful little rodent, so I hope the PP info is worth more.
I will comment tomorrow, so dare this post tonight. I will also later post another one, with shooting info. This one was less than two meters ways, free, and no cropping.

Hi callie,
Your a master photographer, but maybe I can learn you a few tricks in PS. I did this one in 5 min:
First, make a path (it does not have to be too exact) around the squirl. Then convert the path to selection with a rather large feathering, makes the transition go smoother. Then make sure you select the background, not the squirl and use actions (custom RGB to Grayscale) this one lets you control more of the conversion then desaturate. Of course, this one was easy, since the photo was quit small, but then you can always fine ajust using your technique.

No cropping, as shot. Note the tail position, they use it as a brollie to ward off the sun from their bodies.
