"BOW RIVER".

This Bow River of ours that cuts our city of Calgary in half into North and South, representing CENTER AVENUE, is truely the headwater of the Nelson River. The Bow is a tributary of the South Saskatchewan River.

The PEIGAN name for the Bow River is: MAKHABN. It means "River where bow weeds grow". The "First Nations" peoples made bows out of these reeds.

You are looking at 4 images within this collage.

1st.) 'Time' polished rocks which is the Bow's bed. These are now visible in large numbers because the water level has not yet risen. By mid-July the water level will rise by at least 5'. To note the multi coloured rocks you will need to visit the W/S. Both images were registered on 12th. May 2007.
2nd.) Also taken on 12th. May 2007. This spot is a 'favorite' of the anglers, once the water level is high. I've personally seen huge Rainbow trout being fished out of this hole.
3rd.) On 16th.February 2007 the "Chinook" situation was MOST active in Calgary; just before this date one could walk across the Bow River as you will note in the 4th. image of this collage. The latter was done on the 10th. February 2007.
4th.) I've often talked about the HUGE forest on the Southern banks of the Bow River. Well, THIS IS IT. It "tops" the huge slab of ice covering the Bow River. This forest is huge and right within the heart of city of Calgay. It houses different species of wild birds and animals year round. A few of them have been posted in the past.

PLEASE NOTE THAT IT IS EXTREMELY SAFE TO ROAM THESE WOODS.

The bluish tint colour of the water is due to glacial flour. These waters start at the Bow Glacier & Bow Lake in the Canadian Rockies; reaches Calgary after visiting Lake Louise Village, Banff, Canmore and Cochrane. Then it becomes part of the South Saskatchewan River and eventually flows out into the ocean via Hudson Bay.

It is loaded with Rainbow, Brown, Brook, and Bull Trout plus Rocky Mountain Whitefish.

Length: 587 Km. with a drainage area of over 26200Km squared.

This place is a real PARADISE.

Hi Mario
Interesting collage of our beautiful Bow River. Each scene is a bit dark so I lightened up to bring out the beautiful blue colour of the river. I hope you like it.

"Time" has polished these rocks. Eventually they end up as sand.
