Hi Dean,
a saw you want the BG untouced but the bird a bit brighter, it's quite easy. Since the BG was clean and wiht the same light and colour, use the lasso tool to mark the B G and the inverse the marking and the use Shadow/Highlight tool on the bird.
I sharpen it slightly too. Bur I prefer the WS that Harry did. the light os m ore natural there.

First thing I did is using the automatic contrast option in photoshop to brighten the image a little and after that used the highlight/shadow option to lighten up the darker parts of the feathers.
Last, but not least did ad some sharpness by using the smart unsharp mask option in photoshop. Settings at 150% and 1.0 pixel.

increased exposure, and vibrance--saturation-- in adobe photoshop RAW filter
selected the sky
cleaned up noise with noise ninja
inverted the selection and sharpened
used curves to increase contrest of the bird
