Seen from the air just outside Las Vegas, on the way to Phoenix (thanks to Jane Magen [jaycee] for her help with the timing that set me on the road to placing this photo, for it appears that my camera was still set for Eastern Standard instead of Pacific Standard Time).
This was the vision that slowly wiped exhaustion from my heart and head that morning in January 2005. I had been delayed in Boston by the end of a snowstorm the night before, missed the connecting flight from Las Vegas to San Luis Obispo, California. I slept for about three hours and then I was off again, rerouted to Phoenix, frustrated and exhausted -- until I saw this from the window of the air plane, with colours to outdo any Las Vegas casino light show.
Suddenly the rerouting was worth it, for I'd never have seen the sunrise over the mountains like this otherwise, nor known that the glittering lights of the city are but a pale reflection of the true beauty of the countryside.
