Mandarin duck
Aix galericulata

This is a drake (male), just resting by the side of a stream. Here's a picture of his mate for comparison

As with so many duck species these birds are significantly sexually dimorphic - in other words the male and female don't look the same ;)

The Mandarin is a native of China and Japan, but also breeds in feral populations in the UK - as a result of captive escaped birds.

The birds are usually long distance migrants in their native habitats, with some birds flying more than 500 miles a day!

This species is herbivorous, eating mainly water plants.
