Cheetah - Acinonyx Jubatus (22) Janice

Cheetah (Acinonyx Jubatus)
Length: Head and body-4.3-4.9 ft - Tail-2 to 2.5 ft.
Shoulder Height: 2.3-2.8 ft
Weight: 75-150 lbs.
Habit: Female solitary; male lives in small groups
Diet: Gazelles and other antelope; also hares, rodents, gamebirds and sometimes larger prey such as the zebra.
Lifespan: Up to 12 years in the wild, longer in captivity, the cheetah is the world's fastest land animal and the most unique and specialized member of the cat family. It can reach speeds of 70 mph.
Unlike other cats, the cheetah has a leaner body, longer legs, and has been referred to as the “greyhound” of the cats. It is not an aggressive animal, using flight versus fight. With its weak jaws and small teeth, the price it paid for speed, it cannot fight larger predators to protect it's young or what it kills.
The Future of the Cheetah: The world's population of cheetah is between 9,000 and 12,000 animals and the Namibian population is estimated at 2,500, which is the largest free-living population in one country. The cheetah population in North America is stabilizing. Death rates have been reduced and birth rates have increased. Although problems with survival and reproduction have characterized the cheetah for years, these problems are being reduced.
This is one of the 2 Cheetah brothers at the Auckland Zoo, named Anubis and Osiris . He is about 15 months old in this photo, taken a year ago. The cheetahs’ presence here provides fantastic opportunities to advocate for this, Africa's most endangered big cat, and the world's fastest land animal! |
