In PS I isolated the background with "Magnetic lasso". Then I used "Shadow/Highlight" to darken it. With "Reverse" I marked the animal and foreground, lightened it with "Shadow/Highlight". With "Blur" I treated the grainy background. I may have overdone some of the operations. I hope you still think well of the proposition.
