The Maungatautari Ecological Island Trust

The Maungatautari Ecological Island Trust
has been established to lead a community project to restore the ecology of Maungatautari, a forested volcanic cone rising above the Waikato basin near Cambridge, New Zealand.

Their Vision is:
To remove, forever, introduced mammalian pests and predators from Maungatautari, and restore to the forest a healthy diversity of endangered flora and fauna such as the tuatara, kiwi, kakariki, saddleback, stitchbirds not seen on the mountain in our lifetime.

Maungatautari volcano rises like a beacon above the Waikato just south of Lake Karapiro. Its 3363 hectare forested peak and flanks are surrounded by a sea of pastoral farmland, and embraced on two sides by the Waikato River.

PROJECT RESTORATION GOALS

To build and maintain a 47km totally pest-proof fence around the forest on Maungatautari.

To eliminate ALL warm-blooded (mammalian) animal pests within the fence.

To re-introduce threatened species that have been lost from Maungatautari, including kiwi, kokako, giant weta, and tuatara.

To build visitor access gates and tracks and create a wildlife haven where visitors are welcome.

To encourage visitors to come and enjoy the vibrant wildlife, and to experience a pest-free New Zealand forest.

To re-establish a healthy diversity of indigenous plants and animals on the mountain.

To establish a successful, sustainable enterprise that ensures the longevity of the project.

Their aim is:

The Trustees recognise that the only sure way to achieve this is to remove every last warm-blooded pest...permanently. Only then can we protect the mana of the mountain and the mauri (life-force) of the forest.

"For hundreds of years Maungatautari has been a source of life for both Maori and Pakeha. Now it is time to give back to our mountain what we have taken away" -Peter Tairi - Chairman Maungatautari Marae

New Zealand is going through a very hot summer, and the farmers are crying out for rain - notice how dry and brown the grass is here.

Here is a closer look at the 47 km fence that has been placed around Maungatautari.

They have eradicated most of the pests (mice, stoats, cats, dogs, etc., and have built this vermon-free fence around the bush to prevent any more getting through.

They have cameras set up that go off if any animal moves in certain areas of the bush.
