Comma – Polygonia c-album

A surprise visitor to our garden in the early evening the other day. It spent most of its time resting on a large boulder warming itself in the sunshine. As I approached it flew off and settle on the Privet hedge.

The Comma has a wingspan of 40-50 mm. The outline of the wings is strongly ragged and on the dark brown underside of the hind wings there is a white ‘comma’ (see WORKSHOP). In Sweden it is fairly common. The larvae feed on sallow, hop, or nettle.

This one has survived the winter in the adult stage retaining its beauty very well. It was captured from a distance of 1 metre with the camera handheld. It has been cropped and sharpened.
