Elder-Flowared Orchid, Dactylorhiza latifolia , Swe, Adam & Eva

This is a very nice little orchid and it’s quite rare , but in the Nature Reserve Ängskär by the Upplands coast they are common, You can see them grows in hundreds, sometimes in thousands. Most of them have a red colour but a few of them are White/Yellow.
They grow like this, in the last years grass, its almost impossible to find a “clear one”.
The Swedish name is, Adam and Eva.

General Info.

The orchids are 15 - 25 cm tall. The leaves are broad and pointed. The tubers are oblong and hand-like lobate The spike is head-like and has close-set, fairly large flowers. The Elder-Flowered Orchid has two colour variations, reddish purple and cream-coloured flowers. The reddish purple orchid is the most common on Öland. The spur is thick, downward-pointing, and as long as the ovary. The broad lip is three-lobed and indistinctly spotted. The Elder-Flowered Orchid is protected.The most abundant habitat for the orchids on Öland is the Great Alvar, dry meadows open to the sun, scantily covered bedrock, and natural pasture. Along Fly Way the Elder-Flowered Orchid grows on Gösslunda alvar and on the alvar at Skarpa Alby. The orchids are rare from Skåne to Uppland, fairly common along the Uppland coast. Less common on Öland and Gotland. The total distribution covers the Nordic countries, Iceland excepted, and the rest of Europe to the Mediterranean zone. The flowering is in May - June.
