Malachite beetle (22)

My new macro lens has opened for me the world of insects, including beetles. Fascinating. I will come back to the flowers, of course. But allow me to present another nice beetle, taken this afternoon.

The Common malachite beetle or Malachite beetle (Malachius bipustulatus) belongs to the Melyridae family.
It is a relatively soft-bodied beetle, with metallic green with a bright scarlet spot at the end of each wing-case. The male has a complicated series of flanges and cups on its antennae which it uses to transfer sex-pheromones to the female prior to mating. When alarmed, both sexes exude soft, bright red pouches from the sides of the body which give off a smell that deters predators.
Adults may be found on a variety of open-structured flowers in gardens, especially those of the daisy, carrot and rose family. Here they feed on pollen and nectar, as well as on other insects visiting the flowers. The larvae eat small invertebrates, particularly other insect larvae such as caterpillars and maggots, finding them under bark, on grass roots and in litter. (Natural England)

(Source)

Hi Catherine , all that I did was to alter the color of your frame , I used eye dropper to pick a green from the image , and applied it to the black , I sort of thought that the solid black frame worked against the the dominance that the color of the beetle has in the photo.

hope that it is acceptable to you.
