Saxifraga kotschyi (Kotschy’s Saxifrage)

You can see an additional shot of a single flower in WS.

Saxifraga is a large group of hardy perennial plants. Only a few are annuals or biennials. They are mostly natives of North and South Temperate and Arctic regions. A few are found in Asia and they are rare in South America. It is a plant genus with about 440 known annual and perennial species, making it the largest genus in the family Saxifragaceae. The genus name comes from the Latin saxum meaning rock and frango meaning to break, refering to its nature of growing in rock crevices; another interpretation relates to its mention in the 16th century Doctrine of the Signatures as as cure for bladder or kidney stones ("to break stones") due to its kidney-shaped leaves.

Kotschy’s Saxifrage is found in north facing limestone crevices, encrusted buns and mats of beautiful, gray-green cushions. Yellow flowers are drying bronze. Leaves acuminate, incrusted, 6-12mm long, flowers 3-7, petals 3-6mm long, anthers exserted. It is an endemic species for Anatolia except western parts. It is especially widespread in Cilician Taurus between the elavations of 1300-3650 m. I encountered with it while we was climbing to Karagöl (Bolkar Mt) at 2600 m asl [You can see the habitat visiting my previous landscape shots -PH1 & PH2-].
