Orange Hawkweed (12)

Found these Orange Hawkweed plants growing along the pasture field behind the house. They seemed to spring up almost overnight because I didn't spot any the first part of the week when my grandson and I took a walk.

Orange Hawkweed (Hieracium Aurantiacum) also known as Devil's Paintbrush. A perennial plant that is one of the most noxious weeds in the New England states.

Originally introduced from Europe to New England because of it's flaming orange petals, this agressive weed competes with other pasture and field plants. It is unpalatable to animals therefore it tends to crowd out more palatable plants.

The leaves are matted and hairy. The shoots grow from a few inches to two feet high. The shoots remind me of Dandelion shoots that stick up out of the grass in your yards, which soon becomes very unsightly.

I will post a single flower in the workshop for you to view. They are very pretty, especially when you see a large group of them together in one area.

This is just a single flower which I think shows more detail.
