Baby Bufo for Bayram (90) marhowie
(34685) | I rarely do the dedication thing, but Dr. Bayram Gocmen (Dept of Biology & Zoology) OR better known as "Boreocypriensis", deserves this one without question. He has shared his tireless work at Ege University in Cypress to the benefit of every member of TN, and its visitors..And not only offering a wide variety of species, but documenting every post with valuable information/notations.
So I make this humble amphibian offering in thanks.
Job well done! :)
The Gulf Coast Toad (Bufo valliceps) is a fairly large toad reaching lengths of over 4 inches. This shot today is a baby, perhaps 1" in length.
Some exceptional specimens may reach 5 inches. The most distinguishing characteristic of the Gulf Coast Toad is the dark lateral (side) stripe running the full length of the toad behind the eye. Another very distinguishing characteristic is the deep valley found between the eyes. The color pattern is variable. Many specimens are very dark and nearly all black, others may be greenish white, or even a gray-green, as can be seen in the photos. A light middorsal stripe is present like in many other species of toads.
