Purlingbrook Falls (38)

Purlingbrook Falls can be found in Springbrook National Park, south of Brisbane. This is a big one, with a greater than 100m drop to the canyon. In the shot, on the lower right, you can see a trail that can be followed to actually walk behind the falls. It was cool the day we were there, so we chose to remain dry.

This is a shot you may have seen before. Richard Cridland (rcrick), while he was taking us around to see the Port of Brisbane, Natural Bridge and other spots shot this one some time ago, and brought my wife and I out to see it first hand. It really is an awesome sight. Having some decent water flow and blue sky that day, didn’t hurt.

I wanted to try something different (for me) with this shot. I wanted to capture the canyon wall and Eucalypt forest along with the falls so I took a couple of landscape shots, and stitched them along the long axis. I also got to play with some photo recovery software that came with my compact flash card, as I inadvertently deleted the bottom shot, while cleaning up the disc (trying to save memory). The good news is, it works. I couldn’t recover the jpeg, but I got the .NEF file back so I could complete this posting.

In the workshop I've included a small section from the original tiff file of the top of the falls, to provide a sense of scale. There is a lookout, just to the left and above the falls. On it there are 4 people.

Workflow:
I follow a generic workflow now as outlined in my Bio.
Details and differences to this are as follows:
2 Shots taken at 18mm, ISO 200, f/13, 1/60 sec
Stitched together manually (in photoshop) by extending the canvas on one, pasting the other onto the extended canvas, applying a layer mask, and with a 20-50% opacity black brush, blended the two together
Continued as per a normal shot with my activities defined in the bio.
Used overlay layer with 5-10% opacity black and white brush for dodging and burning
Saturation (incremental +15 to master - based on proof colours compare)
Saved at 65% quality for 297K (detail such as this takes a lot of memory – I could not have posted this at the old 200K levels – even at 300 I’m pushing it.)
