Jewel and the Crown (50) ramthakur
(25857) | Friends, first of all, I must thank you all for your kind critiques on my previous post.
My internet connection at home is temporarily out of action, so I could not write return critiques yesterday and am posting my picture today from my work place. I will try to catch up with the backlog as soon as possible.
To continue with my theme of life systems existing on some plants, I am posting yet another picture of a colourful, blue-eyed Grasshopper sitting atop the flowers of Calotropis plant -- an Asian Milkweed that grows in abundance on dry shrublands. The plant is also known as Crown Plant.
Though Haraprasan is of the opinion that this could be a Painted Grasshopper, I have my doubts. I have seen many pictures of Painted Grasshopper on bugguide.com and I feel the American specimens look quite different from what I have captured here in India. Broadly speaking, it could be a Painted Grasshopper native to Asia/India.
However, reverting to my theme, I observed that the species of insects that thrive on this poisonous plant are only these grasshoppers and Seed Bugs.
My observation is based on two different locales 40 kilometers apart -- Okhla Bird Park in Delhi and an interior valley on the highway between Gurgaon and Faridabad in Haryana state. At both locations, both these insects were seen living off the plant. Surprisingly, there was no other insect in sight.
I have already posted the pictures of these insects shot in both the locations.
For information on the plant/insects, please refer to my previous posts.
TFL and have a great weekend. |
