Dinner time (10)

This capture of a Red-necked Grebe (Podiceps grisegena) was a bit difficult to obtain. I sat on the pier, but not only did I have to deal with him constantly diving (and they can hold their breath for a long time...), but at 7:00 in the evening, there were plenty of boats out there causing me to bob and sway. Then there was the movement of the duck. Holding steady was hard, even harder was to guess where this duck would pop up once he dived (and he wasn't very close to shore).

I kept wishing he'd come closer to shore, but he was probably afraid of me. Still, I was pleased to see him catch his fish.

He had a mate and when they became separated, I noticed how one would call out and the other would answer. They kept this behavior up until they were within sight of each other.

They amused me once they had their fill. I noticed they were playful, at least with each other. For a bit, they played with a drifting stick, and another time, they seemed to enjoy pinching each other's tail.
