This is a beautiful male Small Green-banded Blue (Psychonotis caelius). Yes males can be beautiful :)

There is a poor shot with wings partially open showing the azure blue upper wing in the workshop. The females have hardly any blue in the wing.

This butterfly comes from the family Lycaenidae and has a wingspan of only 30mm. The species is found in rainforest along the east coast of Australia and this specimen was captured at the southern most part of its distribution at Macquarie Pass National Park. In the tropical north of their range they have several generations per year, but in the southern part of their range there is only one generation towards the end of autumn. The larval food plant is Red Ash (Alphitonia excelsa).

Just an ordinary shot to show the vivid azure blue of the upper wings. A stunning species in flight.
