 Gold on Fern (54) uleko
(24475) | The Scarce Copper – Lycaene virgaureae
This butterfly is quite common in south and central Sweden in meadows or clearings where there are plenty of flowers. Although may butterfly species have suffered from the hot summer these seem to have done well. The male is the most striking and when newly emerged the colour is really bright orangy-red. The female is more yellowy-red with dark spots along the edges of the wings (See WORKSHOP). You recognise the species by looking at the underside of the hindwings where there are a series of white spots. They are fast flyers often patrolling across a specific area and frequently many are seen in one place chasing each other. The larva feed on Sorrel and Dock. In Sweden they fly during July and August.
Here it has settled on a Fern where I captured it from a distance of 30 cm with the camera handheld. It has been cropped and sharpened. |
