Orange Tip (OT) is medium-sized butterfly with a wingspan of 30-42 mm. The upperside ground colour of the male is white. The outer third of the forewing is orange with a black apex and a small black mark at the cell end. The underside ground colour is white with greenish/yellow apical marks, a small black mark at the cell end and a large orange area from the cell end to the apical markings. The hindwing has a characteristic greenish yellow pattern. In the female the large orange spot is entirely lacking; the rest of the markings are similar to the male but slightly larger. On the upperside of some males there is a light suffusion of black scales on the line between the orange area and the white ground colour.
OT is a species with a very wide range throughout nearly all of Europe, the Middle East –including Turkey and Cyprus Island- and the temperate areas of Asia to Japan. The adult butterflies emerge early in February and are on the wing until May in a single brood. Overwinters as a pupa. The Ibrval host-plants are various species of the Cruciferae family. OT is a common butterfly distributed mainly in the intermediate elevations and mountain areas. Recorded in maquis, garigue, phrygana, forests and agricultural land from sea level to 2100 m. It is much more commonly found in river valleys and near water. It is in this type of habitat that it sometimes occurs in the plains.
