Pobiti Kamini (Fallen Stones) Geological Reserve

It is located some 20 km west from Varna. The stone columns (even some 4-5 meter high) look like human-made but in fact they are remnants of the time when this area was a bottom of the ancient Sarmatian Sea (in Tertiary period). At this time they were so called "cold sips" structures building up around places where metane was siping from the rocks. Even now some working structures of similar nature are found througout the ocean. It is a very interesting and impressive place to visit.

Here you can see the inside of the column and imagine how the methane went through. Simply the calcium carbonate was depositing around forming a kind of tube.
