Scott Inlet (30)

On our way south, on board an icebreaker, at the end of a three month arctic patrol, we happened to take a quick jaunt into Scott Inlet. What started as a very dull day, due to the heavy overcast weather, turned out just right, no wind, clouds thinning out, sun coming out late in the afternoon, a little chill in the air (created by the glaciers to the right and left of the photo.) According to the naval charts on board, the peak to the right of the picture is jsut over 900 meters high. Not to far from this location there was another peak at 1,800 meters high, and I am quite sure we could have tied up to both, for the fjord has an average of 700 to 800 meters in depth. One of the most beautiful sites that I have seen in the Canadian High Arctic. Its just a little south east from Pond Inlet for those who have maps of Northern Canada.

Brightness & Color-balance
Edited by:delfi Silver Star Critiquer/Silver Workshop Editor [C: 30 W: 35 N: 7] (90)

Hi Pierre, how's it going? I tried a workshop on your picture, to try to improve it slightly.

Edits:

Manual color-balance (R-1,G-1,B+3); Manual B/C-levels: Brightness-level (lowered), contrast boosted (+5); sharpened.

Notes:

In my opinion,

1. Color-balance was slightly off: esp. yellow was visibly emphasized.
2. Brightness was slightly too high.
3. Contrast was slightly too low.
4. Sharpening was reasonably good, but not optimal. Due to the small JPEG file-size (57k), the USM sharpening was nearly showing (clouds, critical; slight sharpening halos, esp. mountain-R, non-USM).

In this case processing the file with auto B/C-levels caused the contrast to become too high, the mountains too black, and the clouds less fluffy (bulky, overly contrasted).

(This may be an indication that the file has not been properly processed (i.e. slight parameter-mismatch caused by adjusting several parameters)).

Proper manual adjustment was the solution here, to avoid loosing the original atmosphere of the photo by overly contrasting it on full-auto levels.

I hope this may be helpful to you.

Greetings, Dimitri.

Pierre,
Simplement un ajout d'un peu de contraste et une très légère accentuation.
Merci de permettre des modifications.
Au plaisir,
Luc
