However, the species shown here, Lexias aeetes, is only known from the Sulawesi region and the only Lexias occuring on mainland Sulawesi. Males and females of the genus look quite different. In many Lexias species, males show broad blue-green iridescent bands on the upperside of their wings. Females are dull brown with multiple white to yellow dots. This picture shows a female of L. aeetes. Usually they rest on the forest floor with the wings closed. Here, they are hardly distinguishable from the litter. When disturbed, they fly off with high speed always very close to the ground. Fortunately, this female rests on the understory vegetation of the rain forest. It is located in the vicinity of Bantimurung in South Sulawesi.
