Description:
Males are heavy bodied, red dragonflies with clear wings. The yellow
Wing spot is over 3mm long. The abdomen is particularly broad and
Has a maximum width of 3mm.Females are pinkish brown in colour
with a greenish stripe running along the thorax between the wings.
Juveniles are often a golden brown colour.
Habitat and Habits:
Occurs near reedy pools or marshes particularly around bulrushes
and sage. Often settles on the ground but is an alert species.
Distribution:
Common in most parts of Africa. It is also found in parts of
Europe and Asia where it overlaps with Crocothemis servillia erythrea
(probably a sub species). Originally described from Monrovia.
This is my second post of this dragonfly species. This shot was quite a challenge as I had to get very close to him without chasing him away. The weather was dark and overcast. In the end I got about 10 shots from 200mm with MF from which I could choose.
