Northern Saw-whet Owl
Aegolius acadicus

This is a beautiful, small and short bodied owl. As you can see, they have yellow eyes and a black bill with fluffy reddish brown plumage streaked with white.

They are ~20cm in length with a wingspan of ~50cm and weigh 75-100g.

They are nocturnal with activity beginning at dusk. As such, they hunt at dusk and swoop down on their prey from low lying perches. They are able to skill up to 6 mice at a time, which form the staple of their diet.

As you can see, this chap has managed to get himself a nice meal.

There are three subspecies located throughout North America.

This chap was found just outside Stanley Park in Vancouver British Columbia. It was taken late in the day as evident by the nice light. He seemed quite content to watch us watching him.
