 Tristram's Starling (6) lilisegal
(80) | One of the most typical birds of the region is Tristram's grackle, a starling which can be seen throughout the Dead Sea area, whizzing past in a flash of scarlet and black or perched in trees and rocks. If you're walking in the middle of the desert and suddenly hear someone wolf whistling at you then there are probably grackles in the vicinity.
Tristram's Grackle or Starling is characterized by its strident voice, black feathers, orange-spotted wing tips and black tail.
This bird is called after Tristram, Henry Baker 1822-1906, Fellow of the Royal Society.
Henry Baker Tristram was a well-known British theologian, archaeologist, naturalist, researcher and traveler.
His book 'In The Land of Israel: A Journal of Travels in Palestine', describes his journey to this region, including the Dead Sea area, in 1863. |
