(9272) | Speckled Wood Butterfly (Pararge aegeria)
I think this is one of the most interesting butterflies in my neighbourhood. As far as I noticed this butterfly can be found only in glommy old woods with spots of sunlight here and there. Male usually perches in a small pool of sunlight, from where it rises rapidly to intercept any intruder. The butterfly from my picture really liked that leaf and even when he flew away he got back on this place quickly.
The other interesting thing about this butterfly is the fact that it feeds on aphids honeydew in the tree tops and is rarely seen feeding on flowers.
This picture have been taken with the Sigma 70-300 lens. To take macro shot I have to stand about 1m from the subject what is very odd for me. With compact cam I had to be few cm from a subject to get a good close up. Such big distance has some advantages though. I can take pictures of very shy butterflies, damselflies and dragonflies what wasn't always possible with coolpix. I've never have a good picture of Speckled Wood before. |
