In Photoshop Elements, I went to enhance::Adjust Lighting::Levels.
I brought the sliders in from the left and right over the flat lines on the histogram, then moved the middle slider to adjust the contrast.
Then I darkened it a bit, and did a quick pass with the sharpen tool.
I also passed the blur tool over the lichen lightly.
