 The Crystal Swamp (126) scottevers7
(12259) | On Thursday November 30th, the Midwestern part of the United States was hit with a severe ice storm. Two inches of pure ice are far worse than 30 inches of snow. The St. Louis Missouri area was hit extremely hard. Power lines and trees come down under the weight of the heavy ice. Most of my town was without power. Many streets were blocked by downed trees and powerlines. I was working alot, and sitting in my cold dark house without power, heat, or my internet. So I have not been here much this last week. I did manage to get out some on Saturday after the storm when the sun finally came out.
I love to shoot landscapes, but where I live is very populated, and there are to many man-made objects in the scenery to post here. So I went to the local nature center to get this compact landscape. This is a swampy wetland area.
You really should not point your camera into a bright sun. This can cause damage. But, I love the effect it creates with the backlighting on the iced up trees. This also creates alot of lens flares even with an expensive multi-coated lens. I removed a few, but left some for the effect. I would normally use my tripod for a shot like this, but I was hanging on to an icy slope and actually shot this one handed. I wrapped a leg around a small tree and used my other hand to try and shade the lens hood more to prevent flares. This did not allow me to compose it exactly how I wanted, but under the conditions I think it is decent.
Thanks for looking,
