 Elater ferrugineus (16) sadeik
(201) | Elater ferrugineus is a very rare click beetle that breeds in trees with cavities that birds use, like owls and jackdaws. The larvae feed on the rich nitrogen source of the dung etc and possibly other larvae. Adults can live as long as one month and maybe longer, while larvae can take as long as four years before they pupate. Loss of habitat of old veteran trees and old growth woods and forests are a threat to this beetle and the other invertebrates that also require this habitat. Although in England it can be found in old villages and parks like Wimpole where trees have been lopped or cut for fire wood. Trees like the pollarded one in my gallery.
It is RDB1, red data book endangered. I have also put another image in the workshop of a variation which has a black head. (not an Ampedeus) |
