I love the fluffy look to it. Beautiful birds the gold finch probably the most common finch where I live.

This one looks like a female - its nearly impossible to tell but the female usually has a smaller red patch on the male it usually extends behind the birds eye more than on this specimen.

Hi John,

I'd be using a bigger depth of field rather than a f2.8 you could very easily go up to ISO800 with your 40D which would allow you to use perhaps f7.1 or somewhere about that it'll give you much better scope for focusing error and I think you'll get the image you want.
