[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Hippo mother and baby taken in the Kwai river in Northern Botswana.
Hippopotamus amphibius. Height 140 cm; weight up to 1 200 Kg; Life span averge 35 years; gestation period 8 months. Feeds at night, away from the river, eats grass. Bulls scatter dung with their tails to mark territory and show dominance.
They spend most of their day semi-dozing in the water with just the nostrils and little ears sticking out. Can be submerged for 10 minutes at a time. They don't swim but actually walk in the water on the river bed.
Although looking so lovable and 'huggable' Hippo's can be quite meanies and are in fact responsible for more human deaths than any other animal in Africa - the feared predators included - mainly as a reslt of unsuspecting humans getting between the hippo and the water or sleeping / walking in hippo footpaths at night.
This mother was showing her baby his/her water manners.

Great shot Nico! The little one really shows off his mothers size - I hope the same doesnt happen when I walk next to my kids.

I like the composition and you got good detail on their dark skins.

Very well done and thanks for posting

Your note is very useful. Great picture, though I do think it was cropped a bit too tight. One can see the Mom keeping a very watchful eye.
