This macro shot of an Egyptian Sea Star (Gomophia egyptiaca) is taken on 3 meters (9,84 feet) depth during a safety stop on a drift dive at Abu Ramada North.

The Egyptian Sea Star belongs to the family Echinoderms. These are simple animals, lacking a brain and complex sensing organs. Echinoderms are characterized by their radial symmetry and a central mouth. Although a sea urchin looks round, you’ll find that if you look closer on it that it is nothing more than a starfish with its legs wrapped inwards to form a sphere. The echinoderms are found in a stunning variety of shapes and colors, and are found decorating reefs around the world.

Starfish are carnivores (meat eating) and some are very clever at getting into shell fish. They have amazing powers of regeneration and can re-grow lost limbs. They are mostly night active so during the day time you have to look for it in holes and other dark places if you want to find one. This one was fully grown at 15cm. It feeds on sponges and small invertebrates. They live on depths between 3-30 meter where it’s mostly found on the reef front, external reef or at deep reefs and they are spread al the way from the Red Sea to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.

If you understand Italian and want to find out more about the Egyptian sea star and other sea stars you should take a look at this site: http://www.acquaportal.it/ARTICOLI/Marino/Invertebrati/stelle_ofiure/stelle.asp?Stampa=true

The picture is croped and levels adjusted in PS.

Peter, a beautiful shot! The sharpness is incredible. Is the light natural or you use external flash? Again, well done!!
