Thanks Steve.

(And it’s sitting on a barbed wire..grrr..)

The African Citril, serinus citrinelloides, is 11 – 12 cm.
It’s endemic to Ethiopia and the South of Sudan. Formerly treated as a single, polytypic species, but now split into three, with close links to other streaked canaries. Told from Western Citril by very small supercilium, restricted to area above and behind eye. Female and juvenile lack black face and are much more heavily streaked on crown, breast and flanks. More heavily streaked than female Ethiopian Siskin, with a darker face.

Mid- and high-altitude forest edge, villages, farmlands an road verges.

Locally common. In small groups or pairs.

Sweet, melodic whistles and more typical, jumbled canary-like song; ‘chuwee’ contact and flight calls.

Hi Peter,
No, not a Ploceus. Something from Serinus - let me check the range possibles, and then I will give you the ID.

Hello Peter,
another beautiful passerine bird and its great capture on wire. it looks very lovely. you captured it from great POV and with great eyes contact. Nicely composed and noted. Thanks for sharing this beauty. best wishes

Hallo Peter..
Nee, geen Southern masked...vergelijk. De rode oogjes etc...
Misschien de Lesser masked...maar 't is een gok.

That chunk of deep blue REALLY set this one out..What random luck to have it show up and be of a help..although it is indeed already a stand alone image..Very nice sir!

Hi Peter,

Another bird I have not seen before! A beautiful yellow with the black facial mask giving him a very special look. I love all the seeds on his beak. Nice details of the face, plummage and wings. Interesting background with the big blue spot and an excellent pose on the horizontal wire.

Hi Peter

A good shot of this Citril (of which I had not previously heard). I do not think the barbed wire detracts from the shot at all.

The composition, sharpness, detail and POV are all excellent.
Best wishes,

Hallo Peter,

Hi Peter, elegant bird in great pose with fantastic colors, fine details and splendid sharpness, very well done, ciao Silvio

Wow Peter, barbed wire never looked so good ;}
Excellent all-around mf. And that splash of purple really adds something extra to the image..

Merhaba Peter,
Bu güzel fotoyu kaçırmışım. Gerçekten muhteşem renkli bir kuş bu. Beslenme sonrası gagasındaki artıklarla yakamışsınız. Çok hoş bir kare.
