The Hooded Vulture, Necrosyrtes monachus, is an Old World vulture in the order Accipitriformes, which also includes eagles, kites, buzzards and hawks. It is the only member of the genus Necrosyrtes.

It's 65-75 cm.

It breeds in a stick nest in trees (often palms) in much of Africa south of the Sahara, laying one egg.

Birds may form loose colonies. The population is mostly resident but not very common.

Like other vultures it is a scavenger, feeding mostly from carcasses of dead animals and waste which it finds by soaring over savannah and around human habitation, including waste tips and abattoirs. It often moves in flocks, and is very abundant. In much of its range, there are always several visible soaring in the sky at almost any time during the day.

This vulture is typically unafraid of humans, and frequently gathers around habitation. It is sometimes referred to as the “garbage collector” by locals.
The Hooded Vulture is a typical vulture, with a bald pink head and a greyish “hood”. It has fairly uniform dark brown body plumage. It has broad wings for soaring and a short tail. It is a small species compared to most vultures.

If these birds are disturbed when at their nest, they utter a squealing cry. Normally it's silent.

Hi Peter,

A fine shot of this Hooded Vulture. I think the rain adds to the atmosphere he creates all by himself. The details of his face and neck are wonderful. I love the pose showing off his "hood" and the pointed toe. He seems to have his eye on something! An excellent composition.

Ciao Peter,
bellissima cattura di questo avvoltoio sotto la pioggia che sembra renderlo ancor più grintoso, eccellenti POV e DOF, ottimi dettagli, molto belli i colori e il contrasto con BG chiaro.

Hi Peter!

Most people don't like vultures, but not me. One on your picture looks royal, very proud pose. Blue eye and sharp beak are also great. Rain looks excellent in BG.

Hi Peter.

Not east capturing bird in the rain and you did pretty well in framing this vulture. The exposure of the plumage is very well seen and fine pov against the green background. Well done and TFS.

Hi Peter

Hello Peter

Greetings from Chile.

A good shot of this vulture - nice pose. The blurred rain adds to the shot.

hello Peter

excellent photography of this Vulture in the rain,
shot with fine POV and framing with leaving
a good space and a view on the rain, beautiful luminosity,
excellent sharpness and details, TFS

Talk about tough weather for both you and the bird. I actually like the rainy look you've ended up with. There isn't too many shots of birds in rain which makes it that much more special. Great work. TFS.

Best Regards,

Hi Peter,
Very nice capture.Details,POV,framing and composition are wonderful.
Thanks for posting.

Hi Peter,
The empty space left works well here, plenty of room for the big ugly guy to look into :)
I like the rain that's just visible falling through the frame, it adds good interest.
Also like the leg-up pose, he's contemplating a move it seems..
Well done,
