Another new bird on TN. The Thick-billed Raven, corvus crassirostris.

Endemic to the Abyssinian highlands. A very large, 60-64 cm, black corvid with a massive, white-tipped bill and a fairly small white nape patch. Is easily distinguished by its enormous bill, long tail and white head markings.

Habitat: Mountainous areas, especially 1500-3000 m; also around settlements and in cultivated areas.

Status: Common in its range; usually in pairs, but flocks gather at rubbish dumps.

Voice: Grunting ‘gwrrrurrr’or ‘harr-harrr’.

A lot of local people hate these birds. They are big and black and make a terrible noise. I saw people throwing stones to the birds. But I think they are very useful. In the whole of Ethiopia there is no single dustman. These birds eat a lot of dust and garbage.

Hello Peter,
You must have come back with your memory cards full of new species of birds for TN from Ethiopia. This Thick billed Raven is new to me and your capture of it is well taken from a great POV and set in a fine composition with it standing out against the OOF natural green BG
Congratulations on this posting and TFS!

Hi Peter.
It really amazing bird. It is clear I have never seen this species. Brilliant reproduction of its plumage and all other interesting and unusual features. Pictured scene at whole is so attractive. Combination of sharpness and blurriness as well as soft lighting and vivid colours are perfect. My compliments and TFS.

Hello Peter,
Interesting to see this rare Raven that you've managed to capture very nicely in profile showing the peculiar bill with the white tip on it! Great details and lovely colours of the plumage. The fine soft background makes it really stand out.

Hello Peter,
Amazing looking Raven. Always very interesting to discover new species. It seems also to be very large, almost frightening black bird.
The sharpness could be a little better, but with black it is difficult to reach perfection.
Thanks for this interesting posting
Best regards

Fascinating looking bird Peter, and you've done well to capture the level of detail you have in those dark feathers. Very good DOF and focus too, well done!

Hello Peter ,
This crow is a very strange bird , your photo has a little " chaos " or a little detail loss , but a still good photo of this species .
TFS and good luck .

First off, thanks for you kind words!
I've been away from TN for a bit and missed a lot of shots. This one is one of them.
I guess this bird's name is a clear give-away. This bird must be quite a sight - it looks very powerful. You've capture this one very nicely. The composition, details and POV are all just right. They make this picture click. Great work !

Best Regards,

Hello Peter. This is such a unique looking raven that I have never seen before. I like the bill and the white spot on the head. Sharp image and beautifully perched on that chopped wood. Well done and TFS. Jusni
