The Abyssinian Slaty-flycatcher (Melaenornis chocolatinus) is a species of bird in the Muscicapidae family. It is often placed in the genus Dioptrornis instead. Its natural habitats are forest, woodland and farmlands in the highlands of Eritrea and Ethiopia.
A drab, grey-brown, rather nondescript flycatcher with a creamy yellow eye; lacks white eye-ring of the White-eyed Slaty Flycatcher. Pale eye and darker back separate it from Pale and African Grey flycatchers, both of which occur at lower elevations in more arid habitats. Larger (15 – 17 cm), greyer and longer-tailed than African Dusky Flycatcher.

Habitat:
High- and mid-altitude forest and woodland edge, farmlands and suburbia.

Status:
Common.

Voice:
Various ‘seep’ calls; harsher chittering alarm note.

Sources:
‘Birds of Africa, South of the Sahara’, by Ian Sinclair and Peter Ryan; Wikipedia.

Hola Peter.
Nice to see Your photos. Looks like this one is very small bird. Lovely pose and excellent note too.

Hallo Peter
Lovely is not the correct word for this petite little bird, because it is more than lovely. It is gentle, tiny and very delicate. I like the side view in which you have captured this dainty little bird, showing it plumpish body to appreciate. I like the almost auburn colour in the head feathers, and the shape of the beak and almost droopy eye is rather catching. Thanks for sharing.
Best regards
Anna

Well done..

Hi Peter!

It's fine for me to see pictures about Ethiopia as I have to deal with that country in my job. Your picture is well composed and I like the position of the bird and the colours very much. Your notes are very interesting and instructive, too. Maybe the picture lacks a little bit of sharpness. But even so the sharpness is good enough to reveal fine details. And this doesn't change anything to the value of this picture. I imagine that not many have presented it on TN!

Kind regards

Markus

Hi Peter.
What a cute species. It is unknown for me. Its pose and state of mood are very attractive and you have reflected them very well. I also like surroundings of the bird, nice DOF and level of sharpness. Both nearest and remote stones are looked very nicely. Well done and kind regards.
