Hello TN friends,
Another new one for TN, The Rüppells Starling, lamprotornis purpuropterus.

Endemic to NE Africa in parts of Ethiopia, Southern Sudan, South through Uganda and Kenya to Tanzania.
A large (30 – 36 cm), long-tailed glossy starling with pale eyes. Less brightly coloured and iridescent than Splendid and Purple glossy starlings, with a much longer, graduated tail. Juveniles duller with dark eyes.
Habitat:
Open woodland, farmland, old cultivation and around human habitation.
Status:
Local resident.
Voice:
Variable harsh shrieks and whistles, with some very parrot-like screeching.

(Sources: Birds of Sahara, South of the Sahara by Ian Sinclair and Peter Ryan / Collins Field Guide: Birds of East Africa, by J.G. Williams and N. Arlott)

The note is a bit short, there isn´t much knowledge about this bird, so you can practice on the dutch name: Blauwe Langstaartglansspreeuw (Blue Long-tailed Glossy Starling)

Hello Peter,
You are certainly regaling us on TN with lots of images of new bird species, which is much appreciated.
This one of a Rüppell's Starling is a fine sharp capture in classic pose and from a great frontal POV taken with excellent technical qualities against a pleasing OOF natural BG.
TFS this wonderful new contribution,
Best regards, Ivan

Peter,
The best compendial type reference for Sturnidae is "Starlings and Mynas", Feare & Craig. Rather a lot is known about this species, however, it is mostly spread out among lots of periodical publications. Many times books published from non-African authors (Pete Ryan works out of the Percy Fitzpat in Cape Town) will use the common name Rüppell's Long-tailed Glossy Starling so as to avoid confusion with the rather distinctive race (possible spittable in future) rüppellii of Onychognathus morio (which is sympatric in southern Ethiopia).

Hi Peter.
Amazing close-up of a fine bird. Reproduction of the main subject – cute bird and so impressive tree branch is simply outstanding despite the difficult for correct exposure colourstion of the bird. Pose of the bird and framing of the image are spot on and nicely blurred BG is wonderful too. Well done and TFS.

Hi Peter. If this bird did not have thr purple colours it would be a dull looking bird. But the colours make it stand out. with the bright eye. You have captured a fine close up with good details. A good pose with the head turned to one side. well done TFS.

Hi Peter,

I will pass on the Dutch name! Congrats on another first for TN. It's so nice to see this Starling for the first time. A very handsome bird with the beautiful white eye and patches of Royal Blue. Excellent details of the face, wings and plummage. I love the pose on the diagonal branch.
