The place where we met the Gelada Baboons in Ethiopia was very special. So this time not a portrait of a baboon, but the environment in which they live and we were. On one side yawning abysses, on the other wonderful trees full of mosses.
We were completely surrounded by these baboons.

Simien Mountains National Park is one of the National Parks of Ethiopia. Located in the Simien Gondar Zone of the Amhara Region, its territory covers the Simien Mountains and includes Ras Dashan, 4550 m., the highest point in Ethiopia.

It is home to a number of extremely rare species, including the Ethiopian wolf, Gelada Baboon, and the Walia Ibex, a wild goat found nowhere else in the world. More than 50 species of birds inhabit the park, including the impressive Bearded Vulture, or Lammergeyer, with its 10-foot (3m) wingspan.

It was established in 1969, having been set up by Clive Nicol, who wrote about his experiences in From the Roof of Africa (1971, ISBN 0 340 14755 5).

It was one of the first sites to be made a World Heritage Site by UNESCO (1978). However, due to serious population declines of the characteristic native species, in 1996 it was also added to the List of World Heritage Sites in danger.

Hola Peter.
Hermosa foto. Los pequeños Monos en su medio ambiente natural lucen de maravilla.
La foto de exelente calidad y muy buena nota.

This group of Geladas seems to be in a relaxed state, Peter.
You were right there to capture them in their natural habitat.
I did not know Ethiopia has such wooded slopes in it, so lush and verdant.
Wouldn't the saturation of the green make this image a little more vibrant?

Hello Pete,

Nice shot of the Geladas, seen them on a documentary by Sir David Attenborough.

I thought Ethiopia was a dry desert but it seems it has some lush green hills.

Thanks for sharing.

Excellent composition indeed in perfect sharpness, great POV. It's a wonderful shot.
Best wishes,

Hello Peter,
What a marvellous sight! All these Gelado baboons peacefully sitting in this most beautiful landscape. I love the shape of the trees in the back and the opening on the Park area behind.
Excellent framing and point of view chosen.
Something not everybody can see!
take care

Nice shot with beautiful colours and composition. The lush green forests with mist hanging in the air look very charming.
